Dictionaries

BKRLCC organises and supports a growing number of dictionary projects. To date, these include:

We have several other dictionary projects in the works, including dictionaries for Dalabon, Rembarrnga, Ndjébbana and Iwaidja.

The Njamed Platform

Most of the dictionaries that BKRLCC works on are built using our own dictionary platform, named "Njamed" after the first dictionary we built.

The Njamed platform supports upload of dictionary text files in SIL/Shoebox notation, so the dictionary data remains easily archived by the community and not hidden in complex database structures.

Njamed is built in-house by Danny Kennedy.

Features

The Njamed platform supports:

  • Bi-directional fuzzy searching
  • Senses, sub-entries, example sentences, and various other complex lexical entry features.
  • Categories (Semantic domains) list
  • Embedded images, video and audio
  • Layouts for desktop, mobile and tablet
  • Cross-dictionary links ("This word in other languages")
  • Alternate orthographies
  • An 'About' section with various items
  • Maps (coming soon!)
  • A nested field guide (coming soon!)

Njamed isn't just for BKRLCC projects, we happily help other language centres and community organisations set up and maintain dictionaries using it! Get in touch if you'd like more info or get a quote. Email us at adjuh@bininjkunwok.org.au.
